I was making my way back to camp on a late August afternoon when a storm blew in. This escarpment is on the Kaibab Indian Reservation, just north of AZ389 about midway between Colorado City and Fredonia.
And yes, Fredonia is the same name as the fictitious country in the Marx brother's Duck Soup. I learned two things about Fredonia: 1) I was not the first person to ask if there is a relationship, a
Lake Powell, formed by the Glen Canyon dam, sits on the AZ/UT border. Downstream, the Colorado River cuts through the Colorado Plateau forming the Grand Canyon. This was shot on a hot summer afternoon as a monsoon storm formed. You can also see how the persistent drought has lowered the water level.
North of Flagstaff, US 89 passes through the Navajo Indian Reservation and crosses the Little Colorado River near Cameron, AZ. These beauties are just north of the river and barely off the road. They are known as Chinle formations and comprise volcanic ash deposited by ancient meandering rivers.
These are scant yards from the road, requiring no long backroad drives to reach. Any fool could stop a
The Vermilion Cliffs National Monument along US 89a, southwest of Page, AZ. I was heading to the Grand Canyon and stopped to admire these cliffs. I ended up waiting a couple of hours for the clouds to blow in and was rewarded with this shot.
One good thing about the southwest is you can see the weather coming for miles.
Grand Canyon at sunrise. It sure is beautiful but the pic doesn't compare to parking your butt in the cool, quiet morning air and watching the ever-changing play of light and shadow unfold as the breeze rustles the pines and the birds sing their good morning to the world..
If you haven't been it should be on your bucket list.
Back road from Moab to Canyonlands National Park. Miles and miles and miles of beautiful scenery ending with a steep, hairpin drive up a cliff face. As exciting as it is scary. Luckily I was on the inside most of the way up.
Yes, that's Dawn walking in the distance.
